Drexel ELC is located on the campus of Drexel University, in a safe residential area near the heart of beautiful, historic Philadelphia. The city lies on the East Coast of the U.S, about 2 hours by car from mountains, seashore, New York City, and Washington, DC. “Philly” offers many cultural, recreational, and entertainment opportunities. It was was the first capital of the U.S. and is now the country’s fifth-largest city.
Our Intensive English program has four 11-week terms per year, beginning in January, March, June, and September. Half-term (6-week) courses during the first or second half of each term. There are 6 levels of instruction. Testing is done at the start of each term. Small classes are emphasized (average 10-12 students). Certificates are awarded at the end of full and half term.
At least 18 class hours per week are required: 3 hours each morning of Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing, plus one 3-hour afternoon Special Topic chosen from academic, language skills, business or cultural topics, or test preparation (TOEFL, GMAT, or TOEIC). In addition there are optional free grammar, pronunciation, and conversation classes.
Special features of the program include weekly activities such as visits to historical sites, art and cultural events, shopping and entertainment centers, sports events, outdoor and recreational activities. At least one overnight trip is also offered each term.
Allison Rose Fellowships are scholarships awarded each term to two or three continuing full-time students. Allison Rose Fellows receive tuition remission of $1000 in exchange for office work at the ELC during the term.
The Conversation Network program offers an opportunity to meet and talk with American students.
All ELC students also have access to all Drexel University facilities including the library, gym and athletic facilities, computer labs, and language labs.
Advanced level ELC students may combine English study with part-time university coursework after one term.
Founded in 1891, Drexel University is a well-known technological institution offering graduate and undergraduate degrees through its schools of information science and technology, media arts and design, engineering, business, medicine, nursing and more. Drexel is recognized particularly for its cooperative education (co-op), in which students alternate periods of full-time employment with their studies. | |
