Description: Program Overview Cal Poly English Language Institute (CPELI) is operated by California State University (CSU) in Pomona, California. The institute's motto is "Don't just learn English-Live it at Cal Poly Pomona!" cultural activities are offered including field trips to places like Disneyland, Universal Studios and Magic Mountain. Festivities are organized for traditional American holidays and national celebrations. Participation in the American/international student conversation club is encouraged. CPELI offers five levels of instruction, from beginner to advanced. Course level placement is based upon MELAB scores and submission of a writing sample. Testing commences upon arrival at CPELI. The programs are year-round, divided into four 10-week quarters. Special short-term programs are also available during the summer. Classes consist of 25 hours per week of core instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, five hours per week of an elective such as TOEFL Preparation or American Culture and 10 hours per week of optional language activities such as conversation practice with American partners and word processing in a computer lab. The goal is to prepare students for the TOEFL exam. Undergraduate admission into CSU requires a TOEFL score of 525. Staff members are available to advise new students on housing, health insurance, immigration laws and registration requirements. Personal and academic counseling are available. Dormitory housing is suggested as a way to meet American students. It is located close to the library computer labs, classrooms, dining areas and recreation facilities. University and Location Founded in 1938, California State University is the nation's largest senior system of higher education. CSU boasts over 320,000 students on 22 campuses. The university has an excellent reputation for the breadth and depth of its academic programs. Fifty per cent more business graduates, computer scientists and engineers come from CSU than all other California universities and colleges combined. California State Polytechnic University at Pomona offers courses to over 16,000 hectares of trees, rolling hills and pastures just a short distance from the vast Southern California beaches, mountain resorts, Disneyland, Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles, Pam Springs and San Diego. Cal Poly Pomona is organized into six colleges: agriculture, arts, business administration, engineering, environmental design and science. Along with the Schools of Education and Hotel & Restaurant Management, the colleges offer 56 undergraduate degrees, 15 graduate degrees and nine credential programs. For extracurricular activities, there are over 250 student organizations to choose from.
