Description:
| Now in its eighth successful year, our study tour at the United Nations' European headquarters in Geneva offers a unique experience for those interested in world affairs. At daily briefings arranged for our group only, you have the opportunity to hear and have conversations with senior UN officials, policy makers, diplomats, and representatives of nongovernmental organizations and the media. They discuss the latest developments in the areas of human rights, refugee assistance, peace and security, economic and social affairs, world health, world trade, and related subjects.
And that's not all. You also visit the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross and UN affiliates such as the World Health Organization. There are receptions and informal opportunities to meet with UN officials and diplomats. A guided tour of Geneva Old Town is also included.
The setting is spectacular. Sessions are held in one of the historic conference rooms of the Palais des Nations-the building that once housed the League of Nations-situated amid splendid gardens, with Lake Geneva and the Alps in the background.
Note: This program may be taken for 2 undergraduate credits. It may also be applied as an elective for the School of Continuing and Professional Studies Certificate in International Affairs or the Certificate in Non-Governmental Organizations.
Gilberto Schlittler, a senior UN political affairs officer, will accompany the study tour for its fourth successive year. He recently completed a 3l-year career in the UN Secretariat, during which he held numerous political assignments on behalf of the secretary-general, participated in peace negotiations, and spent many years dealing with decolonization in Africa. His last post at the UN was that of assistant secretary-general.
