Description: A relaxing one, or two week self-led ride following cycle routes and quiet roads in central Europe, exploring the history and landscape of the Hapsburg empire. The River Danube flows nearly 3,000km through the heart of central Europe on its way to the Black Sea, linking the different countries that make up this fascinating and beautiful region. Cycling along the riverbank is the perfect way to explore and discover the area. In Austria, the landscape varies from steep-sided valleys and wide riverside woods to the pretty vineyards of the Wachau, cultivated since the time of Charlemagne. The cycle path runs through historic towns and cities, such as Linz, Melk and Krems, and of course Vienna. The route passes from Austria through Slovakia and on to Hungary. Riverside woodland gives way to fields and walnut avenues, wide flat landscapes to the shady hills near the famous Danube Bend. There are many cultural highlights along the way, representing the varied contribution of Romans, Serbs, Turks and Magyars over the centuries. The beautiful city of Budapest marks the end of this trip. This self-led trip can be taken at a relaxed pace and requires no specific cycling experience. There are no hills on the main route from Passau to Vienna, though excursions and detours (described in the route notes) may include some short climbs. The route for this section follows the river very closely, switching from dedicated cycle tracks to shared routes, and sometimes follows cycle paths on the pavement next to a road. From Vienna to Budapest, again the route is undemanding except for the day out at Tata. During this section, the route moves away from the river in places, following cycle paths, quiet roads and good quality tracks. There is no leader, so you can cycle at your own pace using the notes and maps provided. Luggage is transported from hotel to hotel each day. 6 or 12 days riding, average 55km/day, 95% tarmac. NB: We offer you the choice of riding the two week route all the way from Passau to Budapest, or either of the two one-week sections, Passau to Vienna (DAV) or Vienna to Budapest (DAH). Please see Trip Notes for this trip (DAD).
