Description:
| The Darjeeling Passage is an eight-week program designed to introduce you to a distinct cultural environment that combines elements of Nepali, Tibetan, Lepcha and Indian societies.
This schedule will see students fly into Calcutta (Kolkata) in West Bengal. Calcutta is the intellectual capital of India with an outstanding contribution to the arts, services, medicine in its past, and a rich contemporary cultural life. We will then continue on to Darjeeling.
Built on a crescent-shaped ridge Darjeeling is surrounded by hills that are thickly covered with coniferous forests and terraced tea gardens. The idyllic setting, the exhilarating air and the stunning views of the Kanchanjunga range will be the setting for homestay and apprenticeships.
Students will live with Nepali families in Darjeeling while taking intensive Nepali language training and attending lectures on the history, religions, ecology and environment of this area. This is the time when those who so wish may do an apprenticeship or internship. A range of apprenticeships in the arts, crafts, traditional medicine, religion, the tea industry, and volunteer positions will be available.
We take a trip to a wildlife sanctuary in the Begal plains, a refuge for the Indian rhino, whose numbers are seriously threated by poachers.
There will be a village stay outside Kalimpong set in beautiful wooded mountain scenery.
From here the group will travel to Sikkim on the eastern border of India, sandwiched between Bhutan and Nepal and on the route to Tibet. Sikkim offers some of the finest trekking country in the Himalaya. As entry to the hillstate was restricted for many years, the concept of 'teahouse trekking' has not yet developed so we will be doing a camping-style trek. Whichever route we opt for, trekking in Sikkim will encompass superb views of mountains and pristine forests, a floral spectacle rich with birds and butterflies.
Two days of rafting from Sikkim down the Teesta River will bring us back to Kalimpong where we will go through de-orientation. We will then drive back to Calcutta for a day before students fly on to their respective destinations.
