| Beyond the world's highest mountains, the geography of Tibet's vast plateau has fostered a rich and unique cultural tradition. A magical land of pure light and intense color, Tibet was long hidden from the world. Tibet's crisis with the Chinese Government has drawn the world's attention and Tibetans have resettled in other countries as refugees. But the rich, symbolic and mythological culture of Tibet still survives in the minds and hearts of the Tibetan people.
During our Tibetan Passage we will try to give the students a broader understanding of the Tibetan situation by living in and learning about Tibetan communities: at a refugee community in India or Nepal; with ethnically and culturally Tibetan people in the high Himalaya, and Tibet itself, both in Lhasa the capital, and in smaller villages and towns.
Our sample six-week itinerary is as follows (please note that the semester-length program follows a similar course):
Week 1 and 2 Students arrive in Darjeeling, India. Built on a crescent-shaped ridge Darjeeling is surrounded by hills that are thickly covered with coniferous forests and terraced tea gardens. The idyllic setting, the exhilarating air and the stunning views of the Kanchanjunga range will be the setting for homestay and internships.
Students will live with Tibetan families in Darjeeling while taking basic Tibetan language training and attending lectures on the history, religions, ecology and environment of this area. This is the time when those who so wish may do an internship. A range of internship and volunteer positions will be available.
Week 3 and 4 We will travel to a high Himalayan village in Sikkim where the people are ethnically and culturally Tibetan although they have never been directly affected but the Chinese government. We will stay with local families and experience Tibetan style village life. We will also trek out of this village and experience life along the trails of the mountains of the Himalayas.
Week 5 and 6 We will fly to Lhasa capital of Tibet where we will visit important monasteries and temples in and around the city--such as the Potala, the Jokhang, Sera and Drepung monasteries to name a few of the possibilities. From Lhasa we will take a short excursion out of the city to witness rural and nomadic Tibetan life. We will then depart from Lhasa overland and visit some of Tibet’s smaller cities such as Gyantse, Shigatse and Sakya From there it is an amazing ride down off the Tibetan plateau through the Himalayas. In India, we will spend our last few days back in Calcutta before students return to their respective homes.
