Description:
| This program offers the study of landscape painting or silverwork while living in the magical 16th-century hilltop town, San Miguel de Allende. Students are also introduced to the area’s art and culture through a lecture series, The Concept of the Sacred in Mexican Thought. Spanish language classes are integrated into the curriculum to enrich the students’ experience of Mexico.
Working as a group and independently, participants explore the town’s cobblestoned streets, colorful markets and stunning countryside. Land-scape is interpreted broadly in a variety of media, and students are encouraged to create a body of work that is both investigative and personal.
Weekly field trips introduce students to the richness of Mexico: the archaeological site of Teotihuacan, Toltec heads in Tula, and the shamanic center of pre-Columbian religious art near Victoria. We also visit Querataro and Guanajuato, crucial sites in the dramatic story of Mexico’s independence.
