Description:
| When people gather to talk about the literature, music and art that have shaped our ethics and imagination, surprising things happen. That’s what Classical Pursuits is all about. We offer a different approach to learning that is stimulating, personally fulfilling and -- most of all -- fun. It’s based on the premise that the classics are for everyone – no prerequisites required -- and a great starting point for a personal voyage of discovery. By virtually all accounts, Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, his last novel, is one of the world's greatest. In its principal elements, the story Dostoevsky tells is simple – a murder, an investigation, and a trial. One of the novel's most remarkable features, however, is how much of human experience it encompasses.
The novel constitutes an inquiry into some of life's most fundamental questions. What is faith? How are we to reconcile the existence of good and evil? How do family dynamics shape us? The novel's varying tone enables Dostoevsky to probe the myriad aspects of our being: spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical. With its formal inventiveness and subtle use of language, The Brothers Karamazov illuminates, even as it further intensifies, the mysteries with which we are eternally confronted.
