Description: This course is an introduction to the history of Florence from its origins in Antiquity to the Renaissance. Beginning with Etruscan and Roman Florence and proceeding to Medieval Florence, we ultimately focus on the social, cultural, and artistic developments which characterized Florence from the 13th to the 16th centuries - the period which witnessed the growth of the Commune, the rise of the Medici, and the challenges posed by Savonarola and Machiavelli. We examine Humanism, the movement that conceived the 'Renaissance man' and established Florence as the birthplace of the modern age. Emphasizing the arts, we look at the evolution of style and content in architecture, sculpture, and painting through the works of Brunelleschi, Donatello, Giotto, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo, and others. The historical events and artistic achievements of the period are ever-present in the city's buildings and streets, the surrounding landscape, and in the works of art housed in its extraordinarily rich museums and churches. This course will be enhanced by two day-long excursions to nearby towns with artistic and historical significance to our theme.
