Description: The focus of the Khumbu Sherpa Passage is the true mountain experience: a blend of the rich, thriving Sherpa mountain culture and Himalayan wilderness mountaineering. A three piece program with an emphasis on mountain life and travel the Khumbu Passage is the ideal choice for someone looking for a challenge: practiced and aspiring mountaineers alike will benefit greatly from this rich mountain immersion. Beginning in Kathmandu, the group begins the orientation to Nepal's Sherpa people. After a few days of exploration, gear inventory and Sherpa language 101, we take a week-long trek into a remote village in the Himalayas. This is an opportunity to learn the basics of mountain travel: pack packing, campsite selection and route finding. In Solu-Khumbu, a mountain region of Eastern Nepal, we immerse yourselves into Sherpa life with daily language classes, home-stay chores, and lectures about Sherpa culture and mountain natural history. The village stay provides the group a chance to acclimatise to the high elevation. Commencing on the next stage of our journey, we put to use the foundations of mountain travel (map reading, camping, cooking etc.), to safely enter the heart of the Himalayas. During this three-and-a-half-week mountaineering expedition, participants develop group dynamics, efficient and ethical camping skills and finally, the technical skills necessary to safely navigate a high Himalayan pass and climb a 6000 meter peak. Upon returning to the village, we partake of a village feast and take a scenic flight out of the mountains and back to Kathmandu.
