Description:
| Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of medieval and Renaissance art and culture in two of Italy's most beloved cities: Siena, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world; and Florence, the unparalleled "cradle of the Renaissance." As you travel through the Tuscan countryside, you will see the same breathtaking vistas that are depicted in the works of the master painters. Discover why there is no better place on earth to learn about these two important periods of world history. Walk through Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, to see many of the great buildings of this era, including: the Baptistry with Ghiberti's "Doors of Paradise;" and the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of Florentine government during the city's golden age. Focus on the Renaissance in a lecture, then examine some of the best work of the early Renaissance artists in the Brancacci Chapel. Hear a presentation on that giant figure of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo, before you visit the Accademia to admire one of his greatest masterpieces, the statue of David. Enjoy a panoramic view of Florence and the Arno River from high up on the Piazzale Michelangelo. Delve further into medieval history with an excursion to Massa Marittima, a famous medieval town boasting the spectacular Piazza Garibaldi and its famous Duomo. Learn a bit about the ancient Etruscans in Volterra, a town with Etruscan and medieval roots. | |
