Description: Clay art in its vernacular and learned forms has been part of the Greek expressive culture since Neolithic time. Our special summer workshop will take place on the Northern Aegean island complex of the Sporades - a historical crossroads and a melting pot of artistic influences to the East and West of Greece. On the island of Skopelos, in a studio overlooking the Aegean, under the tutelage of Vera Siaterli, a Greek artist with a long exhibiting and teaching career in Greece and abroad, we will follow a course of Byzantine techniques and decorations on red earthenware. Studio class includes instruction for beginners and advanced artists, clay, glazes, tools, use of studio and kiln. We will begin our tour, though, in the bustling city of Athens. From our hotel in Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis, we will be inspired by the ceramics collections and pottery we visit in the heart of Greece's largest city. Next we will travel to the island of Skopelos where we will create our own pots and earthenware. But afternoons and evenings will be free for exploring the island's picturesque villages, seaside tavernas, and beautiful sandy beaches. We conclude our journey back in Athens with a walking tour of its historic districts and monuments.
