Description: Illinois State University's English Language Institute (ELI) focuses on practical learning and the special needs of adult language learners. ELI follows a communicative approach to language learning--one that believes the most natural way to learn a language is to use it. Along with courses in Reading/Writing, Speaking/Listening, Current Events, Grammar, and Lexicon, the ELI offers Academic Lectures, Tutorial, Error Analysis, Journalism, and TOEFL preparation classes. Every ELI student is automatically enrolled in the Intensive English Program. It includes at least 20 hours of class instruction per week. Classes focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, a communicative approach, integrated classes which focus on developing academic skills, and analytical reflection on an individual learner's language development. The IEP also includes exposure to lectures given by faculty from ISU departments. This class gives students the opportunity to listen to lectures from a variety of subject areas. Students develop academic skills with the help of their ELI instructors. Additionally, each ELI student who chooses to participate is paired with an American student through a program called "Conversation Partners". Weekly meetings between students and their conversation partners provide insights into American issues. Another program involving contact with Americans is the "Friendship Family" program. In this optional program, ELI students visit local families and share special activities. Finally, IEP students may choose to participate in TOEFL preparation classes. All classes at the ELI are taught in small groups of 5-13. Typical class size is 7-9 students. To complete the admission process, students must submit an application and $75 (US) by the application deadline. Fall semester deadline is May 1. Spring Semester deadline is October 1. Summer semester deadline is March 1. Deadline exceptions may be made for students already living in the United States. Students must also submit proof of financial support from the student's/family's bank or financial sponsor. The letter should confirm that the student has at least $9,000 (US) available each term the student plans to study at the ELI. Students should also submit transcripts from previous universities or secondary level schools the student has attended. Regarding a visa, students admitted to the ELI receive a Certificate of Eligibility, Form I-20. Form I-20 must be taken by the student to the nearest American Embassy/Consulate for application for an F-1 student visa. Insurance and Health Services fees are included in the total ELI fee. Insurance and health services are required for all students on F and J visas.
