Description:
| Still in Tuscany, but a world away from the towns of the south, and its rolling hills are the Apuan Alps. This area is remote, wild and totally unsophisticated, you will experience the mountains, superb scenery, and tranquillity. This trek has many attractive ingredients, from wide Mediterranean vistas to remote shepherds hamlets, to wild and dramatic mountain scenery. An impressive series of limestone massifs that rise up to 2000m within a few kms of the sea, the Apuans are famous for their scenery of limestone towers, abysses, marble and the largest cave system in Italy. From the town of Fornaci, we start the walk through oak and chestnut woodland, past hamlets and grottos up to a cross on a rock affording a spectacular view of the highest peaks of the Apennines. En route to Trassilico (732m) we stumble across shepherds and chapels. We explore the hamlet of Chieva complete with its old mill for grinding chestnuts for flour. We climb Monte Forato (1223m) visit the "Grotta del Vento" with its subterranean lakes and "living" stalagmites and stalactites. An easy walk to Alpe San Antonio prepares us for the longest day and the ascent of Pania della Croce (1860m). The view from the summit is quite magnificent.
