| For over 76 years, the American University in Cairo has been a world class Institution for the learning of Arabic, first through its school of Oriental Studies, opened in 1921, and now through its Arabic Language Institute (ALI). The ALI consists of four distinguished programs: the Arabic Language Unit (ALU), Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA), Arabic Language (AL) and Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL). The first three programs provide students with Arabic language courses, while the TAFL program is a Master's Degree program for graduate students seeking a higher qualification in teaching the language to non-native speakers.
ALU is open to any student desiring to learn Arabic at any level. CASA is restricted to American university students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and who are selected by a consortium of U.S. universities to receive grants for language study in Cairo. Both the ALU and CASA are full-time programs. Arabic Language courses are open to all AUC students who lack native competency in Arabic. | |
