Description: This intensive two-year program, offered in conjunction with the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, is designed for students who wish to study Middle Eastern history and culture at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem but are not yet fluent in Hebrew. Courses will span the spectrum of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, with a focus on the modern period, offering in-depth interdisciplinary instruction. …… Islamic history and civilization, along with Arab language and literature, have been studied and taught at the Hebrew University since the 1920s. Research and teaching in the Department encompasses the period from the beginning of Islam to the present day, concentrating on the Arab world, plus Iran and Turkey, Islamic Central Asia as well as Muslim Africa. Subjects which are taught include Islamic religion and law, along with other aspects of intellectual culture; the material culture (archeology, art, numismatics and epigraphy) of the region; and the political and social history of the medieval and modern period. One topic of special significance is the interaction of Islam and Judaism (as well as Muslims and Jews) in the medieval, modern and contemporary periods. Students, even those with an interest in modern history, are given a strong background in Islamic religion and pre-modern history. Great emphasis is placed on the teaching of written Arabic. …… To help each student take full advantage of the resources available at the Hebrew University, participants in the program are assigned an academic advisor, available for consultation throughout the year. Students with a sufficient command of Hebrew are encouraged to take their courses with Israelis in Hebrew in the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students are expected to attain Hebrew fluency before entering the final semester of the program. …… Founded in 1925 to serve as the "University of the Jewish People", the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a symbol of the cultural rebirth of the Jewish nation in its ancestral homeland as well as one of the foremost centers of academic learning in the world. Since 1955, the Hebrew University has integrated international students into its multidisciplinary programs; since 1971 the Rothberg International School (RIS) has enrolled the largest number overseas students in Israel, (over 65,000 alumni–from over 70 countries–to date!). …… Live in Jerusalem, a city that has captured the hearts, minds and souls of the world for over 3,000 years. Explore Jerusalem's layered history and cultural diversity. Combine a rare cultural experience with renowned academics. Imagine learning the archaeology of Jerusalem while walking the streets of the city, examining its ancient walls and seeing its historic buildings. Take a course on prospects for peace in the Middle East in light of the current events unfolding daily in Israel.
