Description: This intensive two-year program is designed for students who wish to study Israeli society and its politics, including central issues and problems facing modern Israel, at the Hebrew University but are not yet fluent in Hebrew. Courses taught in English will span the spectrum of Israel studies, offering in-depth, interdisciplinary instruction. The program is offered in conjunction with the Department of Political Science and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. ...... The research interests of the Department of Political Science are varied and span virtually the entire range of politics, including ancient, medieval and modern topics. The Department offers courses in three broad areas: political thought, comparative government, and public policy and administration. The department is pluralistic in its approach to the study of methodology. ...... The Department of Sociology and Anthropology deals with the fields of urban and rural communities; education; family and gender studies; social psychology; organization, work and professions; political sociology; ethnicity and social stratification; religion; sociology of tourism and strangers; communications and socio-linguistics, etc. In the area of Anthropology, the focus is on the interpretation of ritual and ceremony; studies of Jewish immigrant communities in Israel; the ethnopsychology of Jewish ethnic groups, Israeli Arabs and Jewish socio-religious movements. Studies in the social structure of Israel emphasize social stratification and mobility, politics, social conflicts, ethnicity, work and welfare, the armed forces, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. ...... To help each student take full advantage of the resources available at the Hebrew University, participants in the program are assigned an academic advisor, available for consultation throughout the year. Students with a sufficient command of Hebrew are encouraged to take their courses with Israelis in Hebrew in the faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences.
