Description: CFHI’s Tropical Medicine Program in Ecuador provides medical and pre-medical students a unique opportunity to study intensive medical Spanish, attend lectures on various tropical diseases and work in clinical environments that represent the rural and urban health care systems in Ecuador. The students will rotate through hospitals and clinics under the supervision of local Ecuadorian doctors and will learn about the health care system of Ecuador, common Tropical diseases, treatment and methods of diagnosis and will be exposed to rural, community medicine. During week one students will be in Quito, living with an Ecuadorian family. Their time will be divided in two sessions, 4 hours for Spanish classes and 2-3 hours of lectures on the health care system of Ecuador, common Tropical diseases like malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis and parasites. The Spanish lessons will focus on medical Spanish as well in communication skills. The school may also organize other weekly activities like lectures on Ecuadorian history, cooking classes, Salsa dance classes and lectures on traditional medicine by a Shaman. Week two will also be spent in Quito. Students will spend 50% of their time in Spanish language classes and the rest of the time in clinical rotations in hospitals-clinics in Quito. This will enable the students to practice their medical Spanish in clinical surroundings and also be able to see medicine in an urban area. Students will spend the 3rd and 4th weeks living in a rural area called Pedro Vicente Maldonado (PVM). It is a town located 3 hours from Quito, subtropical, with a temperature of 25 to 35 grades centigrade, with high humidity. It has running water, electricity and phones. Transportation service is good but the buses run every two hours and not at all at night. Students will stay in an apartment that may be shared with other students. An Ecuadorian family will prepare meals and beds. The clinical rotations will be held in a community hospital based in family practice. The hospital is run by a private foundation. Here students will have the opportunity to see tropical medicine cases in addition to deliveries, hypertension, and other rural community health issues. Students can ask to be on call at night. Students will remain working at this hospital for one week. The second week in Pedro Vicente Maldonado will involve community work, home visits and health education programs at local schools. Students may also be placed in a tropical medicine laboratory to see a variety of parasites and learn treatment and diagnosis. The clerkships are available almost year round. Four weeks minimum enrollment is required. The program will begin on the first Monday of every month. This program is open to all levels of medical students who are interested in Tropical Medicine.
