Description:
| There are electives too, like art, music, and drama, taught in the evenings at special academies. You'll also celebrate an AFS community service week. Both programs provide regional orientations. If you study abroad with AFS Belgium Flanders, you'll receive a language CD-ROM with an exercise handbook to help you study the Dutch language, as well as a “schoolmap” with tasks designed to help you integrate easily into school life and the Dutch language.
AFS Students ranked Belgium at the top of the list of countries that provide enjoyable, enriching, and exciting study abroad experience. This country is a multicultural, multilingual microcosm of Europe--a contemporary society with an incredibly rich history. You'll walk through medieval town squares and streets in the midst of a thoroughly modern country that has influences from the French, Dutch, Austrians, and Spanish throughout its culture. Many towns stage reenactments of medieval times once a year, when the whole town is set to look and live as centuries before. You'll love the cuisine that truly is one of the best in all of Europe. And, of course, there's chocolate! Belgium consists of three regions: Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north, French-speaking Wallonia in the south, and bilingual Brussels in the center of the country. Both the AFS Flanders and Wallonia programs host students in Brussels, as well as their own areas. In the north, Dutch-speaking Flemings live in a flatland crisscrossed by canals. It boasts the medieval cities of Antwerp, Bruges, and Ghent. In French-speaking Wallonia, you'll get to know the Walloons who live among the rolling hills of the Ardennes sprinkled with castles and the capital city of Brussels--home to both the European Union and NATO. The programs in Belgium are so popular that the two combined host more than 300 AFS Exchange Students from 40 countries each year! | |
