Description: The UCR offers a range of interdisciplinary courses to exchange students. All regular courses are taught in Spanish but students may also enroll in a special UCR program taught in English at their International Center for Sustainable Human Development (CIDH). CIDH provides an in-depth analysis of Latin American and Caribbean countries from social, cultural, economic, political, historical and diplomatic perspectives. Fall semester runs mid-August through mid-December with Spring semester running from mid-January through mid-May and summer session begins early in June and runs through mid-July. Approval from your academic advisor for your planned coursework prior to departure for Costa Rica is essential. International health insurance is required for the period of study; students must have a current, valid U.S. passport to travel to Costa Rica. At the end of the semester, the UCR will send your academic transcript to the UA Office of Study Abroad and Student Exchange. Coursework is evaluated as transfer credits for inclusion towards your total degree unit requirements; your exchange coursework grades do no affect your UA grade point average. Throughout the regular academic year at the UCR, courses are offered in Spanish in the following areas: Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, Sciences, Spanish, Education, Economics, Agronomy, Engineering, Architecture, Health, Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Library Science, Physical Education and Sports, Counseling and Special Education. The UCR International Center for Sustainable Human Development (CIDH) consists of classes in the following areas: Latin American History, Political Systems, Development, Environment, Gender, Social Policy, International Relations, Human Rights, Literature and Economics. All instruction at CIDH is in English. Dormitory housing and homestays are available. Fall semester begins mid-August and runs through mid-December. Spring semester begins mid-January and runs through mid-May. Summer session begins early in June and ends mid-July. The special Spanish As A Foreign Language program runs early March through late June and again from early August through late November.
