Costa Rica is one of the most popular destinations for AFS Students studying abroad, and with good reason--Costa Rica is a paradise! This lush country is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and was named by the Spanish as "the rich coast." National parks and other protected areas make up more than 25 percent of the total territory, and much of this is rainforest. The people of Costa Rica, "Ticos," are proud, friendly, and dedicated to peace. Costa Rica is one of only a few nations in the world that does not have an army. Costa Rica features 860 species of birds, dozens of majestic volcanoes, countless rivers, lakes and waterfalls, 755 miles of coastline, and some of the most beautiful beaches that you will ever experience. Costa Rican families are close, and you'll probably live in a small rural town, giving you the chance to get to know Costa Rican culture. AFS Costa Rica hosts more than 311 students from 21 countries each year. | |
