Description: The Global Routes Teaching Internship Program in Kenya has been designed in coordination with community members, teachers and school administrators. Interns live with a family in a rural village, help teach in the village secondary school, offer extracurricular activities and initiate and participate in community service projects. It is not necessary to have a background in teaching or a particular subject area. The first portion of the program is dedicated to preparing interns for their teaching placements. After a couple of days in Nairobi, interns continue their orientation as they begin traveling to Kenya's western highlands, the site of their teaching placements. They make several stops to hike the Longonot Crater, camp and go on safari in Nakuru National Park and explore whatever catches their attention along the way. During the journey, the interns work with their in-country director on setting educational goals, lesson planning, teaching strategies and techniques and classroom management. Interns' teaching responsibilities begin immediately. Depending upon their skills and interests and the school's needs, the interns may teach Math, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Social Ethics. Because schools are expected to cover 13 subjects in preparing their students for the national exams, the few teachers these schools do have are overworked. Fellow teachers are happy to have interns to help relieve them of their burden. Every weekend Global Routes interns and staff gather to share and discuss teaching strategies, problems and possible solutions, frustrations and successes. On some weekends, interns reunite to join efforts in a community work project. On other weekends they travel to see a nearby point of interest in Kenya. During the final travel component, interns embark together upon a journey to explore Kenya. They go on safari in the Masai Mara, visit the Kenyan coast and fly to the remote island of Lamu. Global Routes also offers programs in other locations throughout the world including the Navajo Nation Teaching Program.
