Description:
| The Global Routes Teaching Internship Program in Thailand was developed in conjunction with our long-time Thai staff members who have backgrounds in volunteer service in schools throughout the northern part of the country. As an intern, you will live with a family in a Thai village, teach English in a local elementary school and participate in other community-based service projects of your own design. You needn’t have a background in teaching, the Thai language or have traveled through Southeast Asia. You will receive training and support from Thai and American staff throughout your program. After arriving in Bangkok your group travels to the northernmost province of Chiang Rai, where you will begin your language, teacher and culture training. After 4-5 days acclimating to Thai life in Chiang Rai, you will travel south to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city and the center of commercial activity in the north of the country. There, you will continue your Thai language lessons and teacher training as well as volunteer teach at a nearby refugee center. Orientation complete, your group travels to Lamphun Province, 30km south-east of Chiang Mai. There you will live with a Thai family and teach English in a local elementary school for the next 8 weeks. You will spend your first week observing and assessing classes, and with the support of co-interns, Thai teachers, and the Global Routes in-country director, develop appropriate goals and lesson plans. Every weekend Global Routes interns and staff gather to share and discuss teaching strategies, problems and possible solutions, frustrations and successes. Weekends are also a great time for interns to join efforts in a community project, or travel to explore some of the cultural, historical, and ecological wonders of this magnificent country. During the final travel component, interns embark together upon a journey of their own design to explore other parts of Thailand or Southeast Asia. Possibilities include trekking through the lush mountains and remote hilltribe villages of the north, relaxing on the white-sanded beaches of islands in the Gulf of Thailand or traveling to neighboring Laos or Vietnam. Global Routes also offers programs in other locations throughout the world including the Navajo Nation Teaching Program. | |
