Description:
| The Amity Teachers Program is an ecumenical service program offered by Church World Service (CWS) and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA). It provides an opportunity to teach English in a post-secondary institute in China under the auspices of the Amity Foundation.
The Amity Foundation, with offices in Nanjing and Hong Kong, is a highly reputed Chinese non-governmental charity organization related to the China Christian Council. It is focused on social and educational development of China through rural development, health, child welfare, and education programs. Church-related agencies in a dozen countries, including the US, support Amity in its work.
The Teachers Program has been a part of Amity's efforts since the foundation's inception in 1985, and was formed to contribute to China's economic and social development. In China, command of English is an important prerequisite for education beyond junior middle school, and lack of qualified English teachers is one important reason why it is difficult for students in poor or rural areas to compete in examinations for limited places at senior middle schools and university. This lack of access to higher education and career opportunities, in turn, perpetuates a cycle of poverty in these areas. Addressing this problem, Amity places most of its teachers in small (poor) regional colleges which train students for teaching in Chinese middle schools in disadvantaged areas. Currently, Amity has 76 teachers, placed in the provinces of Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shanxi, Hunan, and Inner Mongolia.
Amity does not recruit teachers directly, but works through the aforementioned supporting church-related agencies. In the US, various denominations represented in Church World Service work together through CWS to send teachers to China for teaching with Amity. They are assisted in recruitment by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, a separate nonprofit agency with historic ties to the churches and an interest in seeing the Amity Teachers Program grow.
