Description: The Global Routes Teaching Internship Program in Ghana has been designed in coordination with community members, teachers and school administrators. Interns live with a family in a rural village, help teach in the village junior secondary school, offer extracurricular activities and initiate and participate in community service projects. It is not necessary to have a background in teaching or a particular subject area. The first portion of the program is dedicated to preparing interns for their teaching placements. After a couple of days in Accra, you continue your orientation as you travel along Ghana's southern coast. You will make several stops to explore coastal forts and castles, relics of Ghana’s history in the slave trade, walk 30 meters above the canopy of Kakum National Park, and, as you work your way north towards Kumasi, discover the craftsmanship and political organization of the Ashanti people, Ghana’s most numerous tribe. Throughout this 10-day journey, interns work with their in-country director on setting educational goals, lesson planning, teaching techniques and classroom management. You will also have lectures on health, safety and cultural sensitivity, Ghanaian culture and customs, the history of the slave trade, as well as specifics of the villages in which you will be placed. Your teaching responsibilities begin immediately as an English teacher in a Junior Secondary School. Depending upon your skills and interests, and the school's needs, you may also teach Math, Science or Ethics. In addition to teaching, interns are expected to become active members in their communities and can do so in a variety of ways. On most weekends Global Routes interns and staff gather to share and discuss teaching strategies, problems and possible solutions, frustrations and successes. On some weekends, interns reunite to join efforts in a community work project. On other weekends you travel to see nearby points of interest in Ghana. During the final travel component, interns embark as a group to continue your explorations of Ghana. You will travel north to Tamale and go on a walking safari in Mole National Park, visit Lake Volta, the largest manmade lake in the world, and finally relax upon the beaches of Krokrobite, where you will sample the coastal cuisine and take part in drumming and dance workshops. Global Routes also offers programs in other locations throughout the world including the Navajo Nation Teaching Program.
