Description: Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, making it the oldest university in Ireland and one of the oldest in Europe. Trinity College is set on a 40 acre site of attractive park land and gardens nestled in the city of Dublin. With an enrollment of approximately 10,000 students, the university is proud of its spacious yet intimate atmosphere which makes students feel at home. Academically renowned (on a par with Oxford and Cambridge, after which it is modeled), the university is committed to research and dedicated to its place in the European community. Its library is one of the largest in Europe with over 3 million volumes and the college has over 40 departments which offer a wide variety of courses. Facilities include Trinity's historic dining hall (1761), sports center, health center, childcare center, chapel and student union. Accommodations on campus are primarily for seniors. Trinity Hall of Residence (located 2.5 miles from the center of Dublin) has single/shared rooms grouped around the kitchen and common rooms with easy access to the Hall's sports facilities, libraries and bar. Homestays and off-campus apartments are also available. Despite the excellent public transportation systems, students tend to get around mostly by bicycle. Just a few steps off campus you will find yourself in the bustling capital city of Dublin. Bounded by Dublin Bay and the 2,000 foot Wicklow Mountains, Dublin was the crossroads for four major thoroughfares 1500 years ago. The original city walls can still be seen today. Dublin has survived Viking attack and subsequent occupation, as well as Anglo-Norman rule from 1169-1171. King Henry II of England granted Dublin its first charter in 1171. During the 18th century Dublin was transformed from a struggling trading center to a glittering city favored by nobility and artistic communities. Dublin has withstood the Act of Union and Potato Famine and, today, is a well-loved cosmopolitan city that is a joy to visit. Theaters, live music and museums are a few of its many attractions. Those interested in literature will recognize it as a home to Jonathan Swift, Samuel Beckett, William Butler Yeats, Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde while they were writing some of their greatest works. Today Irish art and culture thrive in Dublin.
