Description:
| After you arrive in San José, your orientation continues in either the highland tropical region at Monteverde or the remote Rara Avis Reserve where you will take guided hikes, learn about rainforest issues and build group cohesion. Two to three weeks of your program are devoted to living with families in a rural village near the city of San Isidro de El General and working with community members on a project of their choosing. Past projects have included helping with the construction of community centers, schools, health clinics and school playgrounds. Groups have also helped teach classes in village schools, painted murals on the community school and organized after-school recreation activities for local children. You have numerous opportunities to improve your conversational Spanish skills and learn about Tico life in the countryside. After finishing your service projects, your group explores Costa Rica's Pacific coastal environment. As a final celebration, your group sets out together on a day-long whitewater rafting trip on the Pacuare River. Global Routes also offers programs in other locations throughout the world including the Navajo Nation Community Service Program. | |
