Description:
| The program site, Mérida, lies nestled deep in an Andean valley. Its elevation a mile above sea level gives it an ideal climate—never too hot or too cold. Monthly average temperatures deviate only a few degrees from an annual average of 66°F. Nearby are glacial lakes and some of the country’s loveliest farming districts. The world’s longest cable car begins in the city, takes you over fields of bananas and sugar cane, and an hour later deposits you in the snow on 15,000-foot Pico Espejo. Within the city, the narrow colonial streets of the old central district seem a world away from the winding avenues of modern residential districts.
Mérida is a student town like none other in Venezuela. The Universidad de Los Andes, founded in 1810 and one of Venezuela’s oldest and most prestigious universities, enrolls 35,000 students—accounting for over a quarter of the city’s population. University buildings are scattered throughout the city. Students going to and from classes fill the city streets, park benches double as study halls, and the vibrancy of youth and tropical rhythms fill the night air.
The Study Abroad in Venezuela program integrates language study with culture courses and the experience of living in a Spanish-speaking environment. Academic year, semester, and two summer session enrollment options are available. Faculty from the Universidad de Los Andes and other institutions teach the courses. The program can accommodate students from beginning to advanced Spanish levels. | |
