Description:
| Participants will take courses under the auspices of the Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile. A city of 300,000 inhabitants, Valparaíso, or "Valpo," is the second largest city in Chile. This port city is known for its sinuous cobbled streets, zigzag roads, and steep footpaths. On weekends you can mingle with the porteños (people of Valpo) at the lively crafts market at the foot of Plaza Sotomayor. Spend hours riding cable cars and strolling the back alleys of picturesque hillside neighborhoods. Just south of Valparaíso, visit Isla Negra for a look at the oceanside house of the Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda. Chile’s premier beach resort, Viña del Mar, where many students will be housed, lies just 5 miles to the north of Valparaíso. The curriculum consists of four weeks of intensive Spanish language study, including courses at all levels. Students are in class 25-30 hours a week. Courses offered include: grammar, conversation and culture. Classes in literature and history are also offered to students with advanced language proficiency. During four weeks, students may earn 8-9 hours of University of Utah credit in Spanish. Those who have completed one year of college level Spanish (through 1020 level) or the equivalent before departure can complete the B.A. language requirement. Advanced courses in Spanish may count toward major or minor requirements. Courses may be taken for a grade, credit/no credit, or audit. Specific credit is arranged with the program director before departure. | |
