| The Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, a former turn of the century estate, is located in the charming, colonial city of Oaxaca, Mexico. We are happy to have hosted students, professionals and travelers from around the world for more than sixteen years. Our emphasis is to enhance Spanish language skills, while also giving the student the opportunity to learn about Mexican culture.
The Institute offers seven levels of beginning through advanced Spanish instruction including Mexican and Latin American literature.
Monday through Friday, students have three hours of grammar or literature (9am- 12pm), followed by an hour of group conversation (12-1pm). Our goal is that students no only learn grammar, but that they are given the tools to be able to apply what they have learned outside of the classroom. To maximize learning, instructors incorporate a wide variety of teaching methods including the use of films, audio-visual aids, role play, music, games, etc.
Language instruction is complemented by a two-hour cultural workshop Monday through Thursday. Workshops, taught in Spanish by local artisans or professors, enable a better understanding of Mexican and Latin American culture and facilitate Spanish acquisition and retention. Regional cooking, pottery, back-strap loom weaving, Mexican music, conversation, merengue/salsa dancing, Mexican cinema and Mexican history are offered seasonally.
Also included in the program is a daily intercambio or language exchange. This hour of conversation with a local Oaxacan who is studying the student’s native language allows the students to practice Spanish in a casual setting while developing a friendship.
Our regular courses last four weeks, although students may attend fewer or more weeks as their time allows. While it is beneficial for the students to enroll at the beginning of a session, students may initiate study on any given Monday.
