Description:
| The Brockport Mexico Program is an intensive immersion program in Spanish Language and Latin American Studies. The language component is designed for students at beginning to advanced levels of proficiency with best results usually achieved at the intermediate level.
The emphasis is on individualized attention to conversational fluency and is particularly valuable for students whose career opportunities will be enhanced by fluency in Spanish. Students in social work, criminal justice, community health, and international business are as frequent participants as Spanish majors.
Latin American Studies topics are incorporated into the language program both as separate courses in the curriculum and as topics integrated into conversation classes. The Latin American Studies content courses contribute to language progress by developing listening skills and vocabulary expansion. The Spanish Language courses contribute to Latin American Studies because the native Mexican teachers draw upon their life experiences as well as on material about family, lifestyle, social relations, politics, economics, and the like. Both aspects of the program are enhanced by living with a Mexican family and experiencing the language and culture in a setting that is very conducive to rapid learning.
The curriculum consists of a six hour schedule daily except Friday, for 13 weeks. The 7th week of each semester is an obligatory mid-term vacation.
