Description:
| Do you want to do something this summer that will change your life?
Brazil was chosen for the Diaspora Program due to its large community of people of African descent and the strong African cultural traditions that have been integrated into the national culture. Based in Bahia, the population of which is over 90% Afro-Brazilian, the Crossroads project explores the links between Africa and Brazil in the context of a country confronted with a number of pressing issues, such as poverty, child welfare, land reform and development.
Located in Salvador, the capitol of Bahia, the Brazil project is Crossroads' only urban project. The group lives in one of the many Afro-Brazilian favelas, or neighborhoods, on the outskirts of Salvador. The Brazil project is an education/training project, in which Crossroaders work through a community organization to assist abused and abandoned children. You may be organizing recreational and creative activities for the children, providing very basic computer training to the organization's staff, or offering workshops on issues identified by the community.
You will have an opportunity to take classes in Capoeira, the popular Angolan martial art; meet with practioners of Condomble, the African religion prevalent in Bahia; and practice your language skills. Two to three year of Spanish or beginning Portuguese are advised. | |
