Description: Course Title: Natural History of Sonoran Protected Areas Date: December 28, 2001-January 19, 2002 Protected areas (e.g. national parks, biosphere reserves, forest reserves) are defined internationally as ‘areas of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means’.  Our Sonoran Desert Environmental Learning Institute course in Sonora, Mexico and Arizona offers a brilliant opportunity for studying the climate, physiography, geology, flora, fauna, and human history of protected areas in several different Sonoran Desert Region ecosystems including Montane Mixed Conifer Forest, Montane Pine Forest, Pre-Montane Oak-Pine Forest, Oak Woodland, Desert Grass Land, Desert Thornscrub and Coastal Intertidal.  Native Americans, Indigenous, Spanish and later Mexican and American cultures have profoundly effected the natural landscape with cultures of farming, ranching, and industry.   Natural history approaches to understanding the natural landscape including a modified Grinnell Natural History Field Journal will be emphasized. We will work with host country scientists and resource managers on inventory protocols and interpretation planning. Substantive environmental service projects are planned. Natural history case studies of sub-tropical and temperate protected areas in Mexico and the USA will be observed and discussed. At a time of global scale threats to biological and cultural diversity, we will critically analyze cultural definitions of “protected.”   Our Sonora-Arizona field study course includes planned extended hikes and backpacks in Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Forest, Buenas Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Organ Pipe National Park, Mexico’s El Pinacate and Gran Desierto Biosphere Reserve and protected areas along Mexico’s Sea of Cortez.  Depending on weather and road conditions these destinations may be substituted by other protected areas of global significance.  Only 12 students are admitted to the course.
