Description:
| Course Title:Environmental Science, Ethics and Public Policy of the Baja Peninsula.
Course Dates: Feb. 1-23, 2001.
Baja California and Baja California Sur are the Mexican states which make up the biologically diverse and culturally rich Baja Peninsula. The Peninsula is primarily Sonoran Desert with an extensive coastline. This part of the Sonoran desert has high biological diversity. It is incredibly beautiful with high mountains, tablelands, mesas, arroyos, plains and a remarkable coastline with rich marine ecosystems. Indigenous, Spanish and later Mexican cultures have profoundly impacted the landscape through farming, ranching, industry and tourism.
Mexicans have and are eager to consider new ways in which their livelihoods can be consistent with preserving cultural dignity, developing economic alternatives and maintaining/restoring ecological integrity. Our course will begin with a natural and cultural study tour of the Baja Peninsula with lectures and learning activities regarding the natural and cultural assets of the region. We explore the ethical dimensions of the Baja Peninsula's environmental policy challenges. We take a multi-sectoral approach by learning with government, non-government, residential, religious, business and educational stakeholders in the Baja Peninsula's communities.
In the first two weeks we do a natural/cultural study tour of San Diego Airport/Tecate; El Hongo, Neji Kumiayii and Pai Pai Reservations; Ensenada/Pacific Coast; Parque Nacional San Pedro Martir; Valle de los Cirios, Area de Proteccion de Flora y Fauna, (Area of Flora and Fauna Protection); Catavina; Santa Rosalita (Pacific Coast EcoEjido), Nautical Stairway Project; Saint Ignacio; Santa Rosalia, Mulege, ; Bahia Concepcion, Eco-Mundo, Loreto; Llano de Magdalena (Pacific Coast); La Paz; Todos Santos; Cabo, La Paz; Sierra de la Gigantes Coastal Conservation Corridor. In our final 7 days we focus on a newly designated protected area, the Sierra de la Gigantes (along the Sea of Cortez, south of Loreto and north of La Paz), a unroaded spectacular coastal region that is the focus of protected area studies. Working with the Sociedad de Historia Natural Niparaja A.C. of Baja California Sur, we will conduct natural and cultural asset surveys in developing the Sierra Agua Verde Historic Trail project for resource conservation. Our service learning.activites include appropriate conservation projects defined as those projects for conservation, restoration, construction and rehabilitation of natural, cultural , historical, archaeological, recreational and scenic assets/resources.
The course requires all students to take the Spanish language component. Spanish is taught at an introductory level with daily lessons.
Only 12 students are admitted to the course. | |
