Masaryk University is located in Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic. With a metropolitan population of 400,000, Brno is a vibrant university town with a rich historic legacy dating back to the early 9th century. Halfway between Prague and Budapest, Brno was a cultural crossroad along a trade route in Central Europe that connected Berlin, Krakow and Vienna. The Czech Republic is slightly smaller than South Carolina in geographic size; monetary unit is the Czech Korun (CZK); current exchange rate is US $100=4,016CZK. Average January temperatures range from a low of 24F to a high of 34F; average July temperatures range from a low of 54 to a high of 72F. Average rainfall is 1.2” per month.
Masaryk University is named after the founder and first president of Czechoslovakia, Tomas G. Masaryk. Unlike a traditional U.S. college campus, Masaryk University has building locations throughout the city. A wide range of courses is offered to international students, including a Central European Studies Program that focuses on Central & East European social problems, economics, civic and political culture after 1989, cultural heritage and Czech language. Classes for international students are taught in English; enrollment in a beginning Czech language course is recommended so that students can immerse themselves in Czech society. A limited number of internships are available for qualified students.
UA exchange students stay in dormitory housing located at the International Exhibition grounds, a modern complex with a cafeteria dining facility. Exchange students are also given a meal allowance and a transportation pass or discount for the city bus and/or tram system. The academic year begins October 1 –January 15 and February 10-May 31. Approval from your academic advisor for your planned coursework prior to departure for the Czech Republic is essential. International health insurance is required for the period of study; students must have a current, valid U.S. passport. At the end of the semester, MU will send your academic transcript to the UA Office of Study Abroad and Student Exchange. Coursework is evaluated as transfer credits for inclusion towards your total degree unit requirements; your exchange coursework grades do not affect your UA grade point average. | |
