Description:
| Open to undergraduate and graduate students, the NYU in Dublin program merges intensive academic study of Ireland's literature, history, and culture with engaging activities and excursions carefully designed to complement and enrich the learning experience. Students examine the historical experiences and political problems that have played a pivotal role in the flourishing literature, drama, cinema, and fine art of the twentieth century. The contemporary cultural renaissance, the "Celtic Tiger" economy, and the revival of the native language are explored in depth by distinguished faculty drawn from NYU and Trinity College.
Program activities within Dublin include walking tours, visits to gardens, galleries and museums, theater outings, musical performances, and guest lectures. Recent guest speakers have included poet and Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney and Dr. Martin Mansergh, Senior Advisor to the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) on Northern Ireland.
Excursions outside Dublin include two weekend trips to Donegal and Galway. Donegal is the heartland of the Gaelic language (or gaeltacht, "Irish speaking area"), culture, and tradition. Students stay in the comfortable atmosphere of the hostel Teach Jack and have the opportunity to converse with Gaelic speakers, listen to Irish music, learn traditional dances, and explore the countryside. Galway, one of Ireland's fastest-growing cities, is a hub for artistic acts from around the globe, particularly during the Arts Festival in July. Students stay in a hostel near the town center, attend theatre performances and concerts and also take a trip to the beautiful Aran Islands, famously depicted in Robert Flaherty's 1934 film Man of Aran. Other weekend trips may include Belfast and the Burren.
