Description:
| As an introduction to Dante, this course combines selected readings with a consideration of the political, historical, and cultural context in which the poet wrote. It will examine the development of Florence from its Roman origins to its affirmation as a medieval commune, and will take a look at Dante's artistic milieu - the painting, sculpture, and architecture which he saw around him as work in progress. The course will briefly review the "dolce stil nuovo" and other literary sources for Dante's poetry. Together, these various aspects of the life of 13th Century Florence will draw a picture of a city torn by civil strife but nevertheless at the height of its prosperity and soon to give birth to the Renaissance.
Readings will be taken primarily from the Vita nuova and the Divine Comedy. Using passages from Dante as our guide, we will walk in his footsteps and discover some of Florence's oldest structures. Also planned are an all-day visit to two hilltop towns mentioned in the Divine Comedy and a trip to another city for art and architecture of related interest to the course.
