Description:
| The Center lies in the northern foothills of the Atherton Tableland, surrounded by protected World Heritage forests and farm land. Our goal is to benefit both ecosystems and human communities of the Tablelands. Students collect data on land use, local resident involvement in restoration projects, and cost effective and ecologically beneficial methods of restoration. Student work contributes towards developing a restoration plan for selected sites within the Atherton Tablelands. In addition, students are actively involved in rainforest replanting with local landcare groups. Our days are spent in a combination of lectures, field trips, field exercises and research. Potential field trips include examining the endangered Licuala plam forest at Mission Beach, camping in the Outback and exploring caves, rock formations and eucalypt forests in Chillago. Recent Students Directed Research include vegetation monitoring of the Lakes corridor, feeding ecology and use of rainforest and grassland habitats by the Blue Faced Finch and comparison of butterfly communities on the Atherton Tablelands. We interact with the local community to addresss conservation, resource use and rainforest restoration issues. SFS students come away with countless memories, new perspectives, skills and friends. | |
