Description: For Area Studies, all new students are required to take a comprehensive survey course called Chinese Culture in Transition taught by long time Friends World Chinese faculty. This seminar comprises lectures, discussions, directed readings, workshops and field trips created to introduce several key aspects of Chinese history, politics, philosophy and culture. Specific weekly topics in this course may include issues such as: Buddhist/Taoist philosophy; comparative pedagogy; comparative politics; historical overviews; gender studies; traditional martial arts; contemporary as well as traditional calligraphy; brush painting and traditional Chinese medicine. Chinese language is a major undertaking of the China Center's academic program. Mandarin Chinese is offered in an intensive three-month program of classroom-based instruction. This required course is supplemented by daily use of Chinese through total immersion in the local society. Students will normally spend 13-15 hours per week in small classes. Additional individualized instruction may be arranged. It is recommended for greater success in independent work that students pursue language courses in the second semester as well. Spring Seminar topics echo those of Area Studies. They are designed to delve into greater depth than the weekly units offered in Area Studies. Courses have included: "Why Communism Prevailed and Eventually Failed" "English as a Second Language instruction in the Chinese Classroom" "Mao ZeDong and the Cultural Revolution", "Chinese painting and Calligraphy" and "Creative Writing Workshop". In the Spring, students may also pursue independent study and fieldwork and as China continues to open to foreigners, options in this area will grow. Currently students may conduct research with professors, apprentice with specialists or engage in their own academic studies with their advisors' direction. Fields that are particularly accessible to the China Center include history and politics of Communist Revolution and Cultural Revolution, Martial arts, Traditional visual arts, Chinese Medicine and English as a Second Language education, Gender studies and Ancient History, Anthropological methods.
