Description:
| Founded in 1845, University College Cork is one of the oldest universities in Ireland. UCC attracts a large and diverse population of students from the island of Ireland and around the world. Visiting students may enroll in the fall or spring semesters, or for the full academic year, and have the opportunity to select courses from a range of academic departments and faculties. "Early Start" fall semester students may choose from one of four pre-session courses: Archaeology, History and Modern Ireland, Literatures in Ireland, and Irish Ecosystems, for an intensive, for-credit pre-session that includes coursework and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see and experience Ireland with scholars and experts. Still other opportunities for specialized yearlong programs exist, including the Certificate in Irish Studies, the Certificate in Irish Traditional Music Studies, and internships.
The Arts faculty, in particular, offers a number of semester-long courses in subjects such as archaeology, Celtic civilization, English, folklore, history, music, philosophy and spoken Irish. While a large number of visiting students are attracted to UCC because of its strong reputation in Irish Studies, an increasing number are also pursuing courses in everything from ancient classics to education to sociology.
UCC has an international reputation for contributions and research in the sciences and provides first class facilities, equipment and academic staff. Still more study abroad opportunities exist in the Faculties of Commerce, Food Science and Technology, Law, etc.
Students live in apartment-style housing complexes close to campus. For meals, they usually choose some combination of cooking in their home-kitchens, grabbing lunch on-campus in the affordable UCC cafeterias, and occasionally treating themselves to snacks and meals out. | |
