Description: Five hundred years ago, the Portuguese arrived on the coast of West Africa looking for gold. They found it in the area of present-day Ghana, declaring the region the Gold Coast. However, subsequent trade -- slavery -- was far more sinister. For 250 years, European powers competed fiercely for this lucrative trade, building numerous forts against their rivals. By the time the British outlawed slavery in the early nineteenth century, forts and castles dominated the Ghanaian coast, averaging one every four miles. Cape Coast, with its beautiful ocean setting and relaxed atmosphere, is an ideal location for your study of the complex history of human migration -- both voluntary and involuntary. As you explore Ghanaian politics, economics, and culture, you receive a thorough introduction to African views of Pan-Africanism and the worldwide African diaspora.
