Description:
| The history and development of Australia, the world's smallest continent and largest island, have been greatly influenced by its remoteness, as well as by its own vast interior distances. Geographically a part of Asia, politically a part of the British Commonwealth, and culturally a diverse mix of traditions from around the world, Australia is still finding and shaping its identity. Today, forty percent of Australia's population is made up of first- or second-generation migrants, mostly from Europe, New Zealand, and Asia.
Melbourne, your program base, is the world's third largest Greek city; home to large Turkish, Chinese, Italian, Macedonian, and Vietnamese communities; and the center of a renaissance of aboriginal Koorie culture. Utilizing the resources of Melbourne University's Australia Center, you have unparalleled opportunities to study this diverse society through the interaction of its indigenous and nonindigenous peoples. | |
