Description:
| Perhaps nowhere in Europe have artists been as strong a catalyst for social change as in Prague -- a lively and architecturally stunning city that has made "artist" and "activist" virtually synonymous. This aesthetically vital setting forms a living laboratory for your study of the interaction between historical forces and the arts in Czech society.
Your program examines the history of the Czech Republic, from its political and social division during and after World War II, to the influence of Communism, to the post-revolutionary period, in which poets and artists assumed the reins of power. You benefit from lectures by professors at the Charles University, including the Prague College for the Study of Art and Architecture, and directors of Prague's many museums and media centers, as well as noted artists, writers, and activists. Excursions to Slovakia, Austria, eastern Germany, and locations in the Czech Republic provide further insight into the extraordinary significance of artistic expression in this profoundly changing region. | |
