Description:
| Covering an area roughly the size of Australia, the Amazon River Basin contains the world's largest tropical forest, second longest river, and an extraordinary diversity of plant and animal life. Its rich, complex, and delicately balanced ecosystems make it a fascinating region in which to explore the conflict between finite ecological resources and seemingly infinite human development demands.
Ideally located at the mouth of the Amazon, the city of Belém, your program base, has a lush, tropical atmosphere and is a principal center for Amazonian academic and scientific research. Through Amazon River excursions, you gain firsthand insight into studies being undertaken in rain forest villages, research laboratories, extractive industry sites, and at the newly created Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve as you deepen your understanding of the interaction between people and the environment. | |
