Description:
| Nicaragua was flung to the forefront of international attention when the Sandinista guerrillas rode victorious into Managua in 1979. Domestic and U.S. opposition to Sandinista reforms led to the bitter Contra War, devastating the economy and costing an enormous number of lives. Today, having accomplished a remarkable level of reconciliation, Nicaraguans are engaged in a fascinating range of discussions concerning issues of development, including alternative approaches, within their country's rich cultural context.
This program takes you to the key cultural and historic sites where Spanish colonial powers, the Sandinista revolution, and the Contra War have left their legacy. Conditions permitting, you travel to Cuba for a comparative analysis and added perspectives on Nicaragua's economic, social, and political development. Throughout the program, lectures and field visits illustrate ways in which social and political movements, including women's movements, are informed by and respond to both domestic and external influences, including U.S. foreign policy. | |
