Description:
| Formerly called St. Mary's Training College, MIE is run by the Christian Brothers as a Training College for primary (elementary) school teachers. A three year course leads to the degree of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) which is validated by University of Dublin (Trinity College) where students attend some lectures. There is also an 18 month course for graduates, which qualifies them to teach in primary (elementary) schools.
MIE also provides in-service training for secondary (high) school teachers and others in a variety of fields such as Pastoral Care (Affective Education), Whole School Development, Education Management, Family Studies, School Planning, etc.
Semester long programs are conducted for students from abroad, in particular for American students. These courses are tailor made to suit the requirements of these students. In recent years, these programs have come under the general heading of "Irish Studies" and include Anglo-Irish Literature, Irish History--Ancient and Modern, Irish Heritage and Culture, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and European Union and its Impact on the U.S.A. A well developed feature of this program is the interesting and valuable experience gained from various field trips such as to Co. Clare (the Burren); Co. Galway including Connermara, Clonmacnoise, and Glendalough; the Boyne Valley including New Grange, Georgian Dublin, and the Abbey Theater; The North of Ireland including the Antrim Coast Road, Giant's Causeway, Malin Head and more. The courses are delivered four days per week which allows students time to undertake independent travel throughout Ireland during the weekends.
Accommodation is provided in comfortable and spacious single and twin bedded rooms. There are lounges with television sets for residents and the college canteen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Marino Institute of Education (MIE) is an ideally situated campus on the north side of Dublin. This attractive college is within easy reach of the City Center and Dublin Airport and is well served by public transportation.
