Description:
| Formerly known as the Catholic University of Ireland and dating back to the mid-19th century, University College Dublin was granted its charter in 1908. During a transitional phase it was part of the esteemed constituents of colleges of the National University of Ireland. UCD specializes in teaching and research with an emphasis on service to the community and contributions to Ireland and international affairs. The campus is located 5 miles outside of Dublin city in Belfield on 350 beautiful acres overlooking Dublin Bay.
The university has ten faculties which range from Arts and Sciences to Architecture and Veterinary Medicine. Competition is quite fierce for admission to some of these departments. Not only does UCD have a large library and several smaller branch and department libraries, but it also is linked to all major collections in Ireland through the Inter-library loan system. UCD has numerous clubs, societies, computer facilities, a health center, childcare, and several campus restaurants. Its sports facilities include an eight lane Olympic standard athletic track, ten soccer pitches, 11 tennis courts and a superb indoor sports center.
The university is now able to house 1300 of its 12,000 students in 3 and 4 bedroom modern apartments. Independent lodgings and hostels are also an option.
Beautiful and historic Dublin is twenty minutes away by bus. Alternatively, a visit to the nearby town of Dun Laoghaire is a treat. Once named Kingstown by the British, it is now the yachting center for the "member only" Royal Irish, National & Royal St. George yacht clubs.
