Description:
| The International Summer School in Irish Studies at University College, Cork will host its 23rd Summer School programme. The theme of the School will be Visions of Ireland: history, literature and culture. The School will examine how the Irish expressed a sense of their identity through their literature from the earliest times by exploring Irish literature and history from early Christian texts to modern writers in their cultural and historical context. In particular, the school will concentrate on Munster's unique historical and literary heritage. History lectures will examine Ireland's "Golden Age." Early Irelandproduced one of the most vibrant and sophisticated cultures of Western Europe. The School examines the impact of the Irish writers and how they shaped their culture and constructed an identy for their people.
The Literature lectures will focus on WB Yeats and Elizabeth Bowen, two of the most important figures in modern Irish writing. The early poems of WB Yeats will be studied. Yeats was one of the architects of Celtic Renaissance and his poems mark him as one of the crucial figures in modern literature. The second week of the summer school will consider North Cork born novelish Elizabeth Bowen's place within twentieth-century Irish writing.
The 2002 Summer School in Irish Studies will draw on the expertise of established scholars in the disciplines of literature, history, Irish language, and music. The school will run from Sunday, June 16th to Friday, July 12th with a full programme of morning lectures, afternoon, seminars and a series of field trips to places connected with the figures examined. The programme will also include cultrual events, Irish Literature and History seminars and Traditional Irish Music Nights. It is a residential Summer School with a full social program and offers credits. The School is suitable for students of history and literature, post-graduates, teachers and researchers in Irish studies and those generally interested in Irish culture.
