Description:
| Ireland is currently going through a period of significant change, marked by political debate and economic challenge. There is vigorous discussion on the issues of national autonomy, European commitment, cultural identity and the accommodation of difference, the call for renewal and the role of traditional customs and values. Today, these issues are debated within the context of Europe and the wider world community. The Irish heritage is varied and diverse; it has evolved over many centuries and has shown itself capable of assimilating widely different influences. The history of Irish culture and politics is one of constant renewal and enrichment.
This 2 1/2 week program will examine Irish heritage and identity through a wide spectrum of topics, covering Archaeology, Folklore, Drama, Literature, History and Politics, Music, and the Arts. The course will provide new insights for the students already familiar with Ireland, but is equally accessible to the newcomer. Lectures and seminars will be complimented by visits, field tours and musical events. Lectures will be given by faculty members of international renown and by distinguished guest speakers from the Arts and public life in Ireland.
The International Summer School will be held on the campus of University College Dublin, which is the largest university college in Ireland. The campus is located in Belfield; approximately three miles from the center of the city. Meals and light refreshments are available at reasonable prices in the college restaurant. Buses from the city centre serve the campus at ten-minute intervals. Other facilities on the campus include the college Library, a bank (Bank of Ireland, Belfield), an indoor sports centre, playing fields and tennis courts, a student club and bar.
Single rooms are available in college residences in 3 or 4 bedroom units which include kitchen and dining-room. Facilities include a laundromat and shop. Bed linen and towels are provided. Students may cater for themselves or use the college restaurant.
