Description: In 1921, a Leicester businessman gave 37 acres of land to the city. This gift spurred the opening of University College, Leicester. Following World War II, the College gradually began to grow and, in 1957, became the University of Leicester. The University has continued to flourish and new construction by outstanding architects has become the norm. In the 1990's, an Arts and Sciences Building and two accommodation complexes were added to this campus of 8,000 students. The University with five faculties and forty departments has a strong academic record and is known for its research (i.e. genetic fingerprinting). The library contains over a million items, the Computer Center houses state-of-the-art technology, an excellent sports facility hosts over 40 sports clubs, and there is a solid network of student support services. The centrally located Students Union has a store, food court, travel center, laundry, bars, welfare office, accommodation officer, video arcade, print shop, and a lively nightclub. The Students Union also engages hundreds of bands during the school year. There are nearly 100 societies. Coffee shops, sandwich bars, and restaurants, all economically priced and offering a wide array of choices, are found at numerous campus locations. Leicester University has six Halls of Residence, five of which are Edwardian houses built in a park setting. Halls have single and shared rooms and provide two meals a day. There are common rooms and television rooms. Entertainment--discos, balls, concerts, films, and sports events--are organized by each Hall. Self catering accommodations are also available and feature single study bedrooms with a shared kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. One of the residences has a shop, common room, bar, and restaurant. There are planned sporting and social events. Flats and private accommodations are another option. Leicester is in the heart of England, just 70 minutes north of London by train. Theater, music, and art keep the city vibrant. Excellent shopping, a 700 year old market, and sport and leisure activities add to the appeal of its multicultural community. A nearby castle, described as spectacular, and the beauty of the countryside are added bonuses to visitors and residents.
